Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
For the moment, buzz around town is focused not on the slashed prices at Newbury's finest boutiques, but instead, it surrounds the deep discounts that await us this spring at the off-priced Nordstorm Rack. It took awhile for the Seattle-based chain to set its roots in Massachusetts, but Bostonians are digging this full-blown takeover. We're reminded of the void in our hearts and wallets left by the Filene's Basement bankruptcy every time we pass the gigantic two-floor space at 501 Boylston Street—which is why the latest sign of life in the location, namely an actual a Rack sign, induces as much joy as the holidays did.
Now, saving 50—60% is even more satisfying when we can also subtract the expense of gas and a Zipcar when heading to the 'burbs.
