Even if Boston ranks at the bottom for pet ownership nationwide, the local animal-loving contingent is a pretty tight community, and small businesses like Audrey's on Newbury Street are at the core of it. Fans of the supply store—named after the bulldog belonging to owners Brittany and Brad—will be sad to learn that the shop was outbid on its lease by a frozen yogurt chain (aren't there at least a handful of them on the street already?), and is preparing to close its doors this March.
What's so unfortunate about the recent events is that the store was profitable and had even been recognized as one of the city's top ten businesses by Boston Magazine. There had been no plans to slow its momentum, but what small retailer can fight a 133% rent increase? On its Facebook page, fans have already begun suggested alternate locations for Audrey's to pursue continued operations. In the meantime, we hope the owners are receiving plenty of warming puppy kisses.
