Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Isabel Marant for H&M hits the racks tomorrow morning, and our guess is that this collaboration will be a tad insane. Sure, Marant may be a tricky label to hunt down in Boston—with only a handful of stores stocking the Parisian line—but furthermore, most of us can't drop hundreds on a single item of clothing or her now-iconic wedge sneakers. So, with the prediction that Marantaholics will turn out in droves, you're probably wondering how to get at the front of the line. Here we spill all our tips and the store rules.
WHERE TO SHOP
Boston, you have two stores to shop from. Choose wisely:
Back Bay: 100 Newbury Street at Clarendon Street; (617) 859-3192
Downtown Crossing: 350 Washington Street; (617) 482-7001
WHEN TO GET THERE
Doors open at 8am tomorrow morning, Thursday, November 14. Expect people to line up hours ahead (likely as early as 4am or 5am). If you don't want to brave the cold, you can battle the interwebs on the H&M website at 12pm.
HOW TO SHOP
H&M will use its tried-and-true wristband system. When stores open at 8am, the first 420 customers in line will be given a bracelet. Each bracelet is assigned a color, with 14 color groups in total (30 people per group, assigned in the order they queued up). Each group will be allowed inside to shop for 15 minutes total, with five minutes between each group. If you don't have a bracelet, you'll have to wait three and a half hours until the customers with bracelets have taken their shopping turns.
SHOPPING LIMITS AND RETURNS
To curb resellers, H&M is enforcing a purchase limit: you can only snag up to four of a style in store, and only one item per style online. H&M has extended its return period from three days to seven. If you miss that time window, they'll still give you store credit, with or without a receipt.
TIPS AND TRICKS
First of all, do your homework to know what to grab during that brief 15 minute slot. Racked National posted pretty much every item and its price from the lookbook. Second, remember that there are both a men's and teen collection as well—Anyone to shop for on your holiday gift list? Are you super petite? Don't mind rocking a men's silhouette? If so, check them out. The three collections veer on the expensive side for fast fashion, but just look through the pieces. You'll be willing to drop a premium H&M price for a taste of Marant's boho-rock look.
