Kennedy Elsey Recommends Leggings for 3AM Wake Up Calls

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Into It, where, we chat with Boston's movers, shakers, and candlestick makers (okay not really) about how style fits into their lives.

What makes Boston great? It's the plethora of interesting people doing interesting things. Though not always falling in the fashion realm, we think they deserve some notice. You may already know this week's subject: Kennedy Elsey is one of the voices behind Mix 104.1's morning show, "Karson & Kennedy." Kennedy not only has a sense of adventure (want to rappel down buildings, anyone?), but she also works with local nonprofits including the Special Olympics, Girl Scouts of Massachusetts, and the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. With a resume that touches upon performance and pop culture know-how, we knew she'd have plenty to discuss about style.

1. Describe your style.
It's a mish mash. I have a job that allows me to dress funky but getting up at 3am makes comfort sometimes key.

2. How does your work influence your style?
It makes it sloppy. I have to work hard to make it so I'm not in leggings and sweaters every day. 3am is early and when it's cold out putting on tights and a cute skirt is a challenge—one I don't always rise to.

3. Where do you shop in Boston?
I am all over the place. Love KuDeTa in Southie, Portabello Road in Chestnut Hill, and in the mall H&M is my favorite.

4. Where do you not shop in Boston?
I can't shop at stores with 21 in the title for anything but accessories.

5. Describe Boston's fashion sense in three words.
Immediate. Forward. Fun.

6. What's the one thing you can't live without?
My tall brown boots. And those damn leggings.

7. And the one you can't live with?
Ugg boots.

8. What is your biggest indulgence?
I have one pair of Manolo Blahniks—I never thought I'd spend that much on shoes, but they are classic.

9. If you could only exist in one moment in time, what would it be?
I loved the 80s. Everything about it.

10. And what would you be wearing?
Big hair, baby, big hair.
