What makes Boston great? It's the plethora of interesting people doing interesting things. Though not always falling in the fashion realm, we think they deserve some notice. Hailing a cab in Boston has slowly become unnecessary, with apps like Uber, Lyft, and Hailo handling the task for you. Behind the Hailo team in particular is Boston leader Vanessa Kafka, who during her off-hours, can be found hanging in the city's tech scene and playing music with her band as a singer/songwriter. We talked with Vanessa about her style, her favorite moment in time, and how she describes Boston style.
1. Describe your style.
Colorful and relaxed. Jeans with a bright top, a dress and a fun scarf, the occasional blazer. You'll rarely catch me wearing black...that is especially true in winter! I tend to dress up my outfits with a cute pair of shoes or a chunky necklace.
2. How does your work influence your style?
At HAILO we want drivers to feel welcome and in good hands. I want to make sure that no matter what I look approachable but also professional.
3. Where do you shop in Boston?
Ann Taylor, Nordstrom Rack, TJMaxx.
4. Where do you not shop in Boston?
I wouldn't say there's anything on my "black list" per se. But I generally try to find a good balance between quality and style without sacrificing my wallet. That said, if I find something I really like that I know I'll use a lot (like a great pair of jeans!) I'll splurge.
5. Describe Boston's fashion sense in three words.
Young, warm, loose.
6. What's the one thing you can't live without?
My Contigo water bottle. I carry the thing around like it's a child and miss it all day long if I forget to bring it to work.
7. And the one you can't live with?
Really short and tight miniskirts in the workplace. I am all for showing off your assets, but if you want your boss to take you seriously, dress to impress, not distract. There's other ways to embrace your femininity.
8. What is your biggest indulgence?
Chocolate chip cookies and gummy bears.
9. If you could only exist in one moment in time, what would it be?
My wedding day—I got married a little over a month ago and it was the best day. To have all my family and close friends in the same place together...I would happily freeze that moment in time.
10. And what would you be wearing?
My lace wedding dress and a pair of orange heels.
