Swirl Launches The Next Phase of Mindblowing App Shopping

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

You may recall the Back Bay-based shopping app Swirl and its plan for world domination. The platform finally entered the second phase of its online-meets-offline retail experience, namely, installing battery-powered Bluetooth beacons at top stores that speak to your smartphone upon entering the space. All that "clipping" we told you about comes in quite handy here: personalized offers are sent to you in the form of a push notification as you peruse racks for that desired item buried within. And boom—here's a discount for that item this week.

While early adopters of the entire Swirl app are largely a national bunch, there are several regional brands catching on to this in-store component. Alex and Ani, Timberland, Scott James, and Exhale Spa are leading the pack, with more heavy hitters likely on the way. Want to try the whole thing out? Don't know where to begin? Swirl put together a cool Vine if you're a visual type; download the app here.
