Janji, a running apparel company with a social welfare spin, was born in St. Louis at Washington University and now calls Brookline home. The brand has gained momentum in running circles—and even gained the attention of Forbes—with its mission to give back through running in a way other than the traditional "race for a cause" model. This fall, Janji is rolling out its expanded product line: last Wednesday, co-founders Mike Burnstein and Dave Spandorfer launched with a long-sleeved shirt and plan to introduce quarter zips this week.

Each collection of products represents an impoverished nation that the startup works within using a partner organization, for example battling malnutrition in Haiti with Medika Mamba or the water crisis in Kenya with KickStart. Originally the apparel played off the colors from each country's flag in its design, but now they also offer motifs such as a llama for Peru. With the men's and women's lines priced between $20 and $62, every purchase is a reasonable sum and offers proceeds for the relief groups. It's also a colorful way to hit the pavement in something other than every other person's Lululemon (and they do more, too).
