Providence, our southern neighbor, has its biannual StyleWeek Northeast presentation on the horizon, hosting five Boston-based designers as well as local students as part of a week-long runway show series at the Biltmore Hotel. The group's eighth season kicks off this upcoming Sunday, January 19, and runs through next Saturday, January 25, with three shows per night and a daily accessories pop-up to precede the catwalk displays. While several newcomers are on the schedule—for example Reggie Merome's menswear line Chevalier Homme and Boston alums Meghan Doyle (School of Fashion Design) and June Monteiro (MassArt)—this upcoming season also marks the return of StyleWeek originators Samuel Vartan and David Chum's Selahdor.
The week highlights 16 designers total in addition to a Wednesday night SEED show, an initiative founder Rosanna Ortiz Sinel hopes to parlay into a mentorship program for student designers with seminars hosted by participating StyleWeek designers. "It's the event I've created after StyleWeek that I'm proudest of, shedding light on the talent in our backyard," says Sinel. Talent from NYC's Fashion Institute of Technology and Boston's School of Fashion Design and MassArt will present their work to the audience, having been hand-selected by the department head from each respective school.
The Fall 2014 collections are also noteworthy as childrenswear will make its StyleWeek debut while menswear will show for the first time since its inaugural event in 2010. Tickets are still available, ranging from $30 to $60.
