Hot Trainer #7: Emily Susen

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Racked Boston's search for the city's hottest trainer. Over the coming weeks, we'll profile eight smoking locals—fitness experts who not only look hot in spandex, but can make you look amazing too. Once you've gotten to know everyone, we'll host a March Madness-style showdown in which readers vote for their favorites. Let the games begin!

There's no way around it: this woman is ripped. Little wonder, given that Emily Susen teaches at both Recycle Studio and Barry's Bootcamp Boston. But hers was a journey. A regular workout devotee in art school ("I was one of the few students who actually used the gym!"), she used to divide her time between spinning duties and a graphic design career. Then came the epiphany: "I was working full-time in advertising, but was slowly realizing that I cared more about my classes than my work at my desk job."

Today she's the teacher who kicks it up a notch with her "tough but encouraging" style. "I'll be hollering and swearing at you one minute, and then telling you how awesome you are the next minute," says the Back Bay denizen, who cheerfully admits that might sometimes involve a swear word or two.

Regulars know her love of electronic, pop and hip hop in her classes, but here's a secret: in her personal training time she's a hard rock fan. "It's like my secret kryptonite that I keep to myself!" Another secret? She's played the drums since she was 9. (A pause for applause.)

Emily's busy in myriad other ways, too, traveling, beaching, skiing, and trying out new restaurants and workouts. Oh, and: "I'm in the process of planning my wedding for next September, which is taking up a good chunk of my free time!"
