Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

There's no denying that Boston's exercise of choice is simple hit-the-pavement running. We have beautiful tree-lined streets, tricky hills, and winding routes that will always keep runners on their toes. Not to mention, a handful of the global leaders in sports innovation call the Bay State home, especially those ubiquitous footwear kings. If any of the many yoga, barre, core, or spin workouts around eastern Massachusetts start to bore you, just head north, south, east, west...wherever. Loads of mountains, water, and wooded trails are begging us to climb, kayak, and ski our way to a good time. Sounds a bit like fitness paradise, doesn't it?

Here's a roundup of twelve stellar stores to outfit your latest physical endeavors and 2013 resolutions, ranging from running specialists located along the final gruesome miles of the Boston Marathon to boutiques stocking stylish apparel for urban yogis and gym-goers.

Check out our shopping maps for New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, or conserve your energy by heading to Racked National for their comprehensive online guide. NRO Sport

North River Outfitter just opened its NRO Sport wing to serve as Boston's destination for popular and preppy sports in the area: skiing, sailing, tennis, squash, fly fishing and more. Expect to find soft goods from Patagonia, Henry Lloyd, Brooks, KJUS, and more.

Core de Vie

This fitness center-meets-spa hosts Pilates, Gyrotonic, and Cross Core classes, performs acupuncture and massage...and also, sells yoga wear from beloved brands like Vibram and lululemon. Busy customers appreciate the ease of shopping and sweating all in the same trip.

City Sports

City Sports and Boston go hand-in-hand. We like athletic endeavors, they like to dress us appropriately. Running, training, swimming, tennis, you name it—they'll have some Under Armour, Nike, and Speedo to suit it. You know you see their signature tees on every other person at the gym.

Athleta

The Gap-owned Athleta chain may be new to the area, but already Bostonians are beaming with the lineup of free (yes, free) yoga, pilates, and club runs on the calendar. That effectively entices us to pick up some cute workout gear while we're at it. Forgot your mat? They sell them.

New Balance Boston Experience Store

Earlier this year, local legend New Balance opened an "Experience Store" in the heart of Boston, Copley Square to be exact, to share its history with the public. Take the learning opportunity to get behind-the-scenes content on your sneaker as you browse.

Marathon Sports

This store gets bragging rights for sitting literally at the Boston Marathon finish line, but that's not what makes it a winner in the local market. Rather, the running focused specialty store is known for its gait assessment program, founded in the early 90s, and exceptional customer service. They also offer student discounts when you show a valid student ID.

South End Athletic Company

South End Athletic Company has a superior running goods selection because its founders are serious runners themselves. The merchandise is coupled with video gait analysis to select the proper shoe, and a double whammy of group runs and personal coaching make sure you put 'em to use. A partnership with Recycle Studio across the street ensures there is spin shoe inventory as well.

Eastern Mountain Sports

For decades Eastern Mountain Sports has been providing New England with the ultimate selection of outdoor gear and apparel—everything from tents to bike shorts. Based in New Hampshire, their Climb School gives you the tools to explore the White Mountains and beyond. This location rents kayaks, sleeping bags, snowshoes, and more.

New Balance Factory Store

This is the spot for sports enthusiasts on a budget. The store carries men's, women's, and children's. The footwear is typically factory seconds, closeouts or discontinued product.

Heartbreak Hill Running Company

Named after the heartbreaking Boston Marathon stretch, Heartbreak Hill Running Company is the Newton outpost of SEAC. Customers are endlessly challenged by the Firehouse Run, an HHRC-devised route through the neighborhood. The shop will gladly log your completion times as you progress.

Stil Studio

Like Core de Vie and Athleta, Stil Studio offers both fitness and retail side-by-side. What distinguishes Betty Riaz's boutique is the curated set of merchandise to complement a yoga-filled lifestyle. Plenty of parking and proximity to other stores makes this a good stop for weekend errands.

lululemon athletica Legacy Place

While you're at it, why not stop into the active-girl's mainstay Lululemon for beloved crops, leggings, and technically sound apparel. The Legacy Place venue offers community classes for yoga, self-defense, and more.
